Tucson, AZ — The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) has awarded Tucson Electric Power (TEP) and the City of Tucson a $75,000 grant to be used to provide solar generated power to a municipal water treatment facility. The Hayden/Udall Water Treatment Facility Solar Integration Project will provide solar electricity to several pumps and associated water treatment equipment that operate continuously. In addition, the project will be documented and marketed through education and training programs.

The PV [photovoltaic] system installation is supported, in part, by funding from the Department of Energy through the Solar Electric Power Association’s Solar Power Solutions program.

"In light of the country’s increasing concern about energy security this project is an excellent example of utilizing PV to ensure that essential services have a reliable power supply", said Jeffrey A. Serfass, General Manager, SEPA. "The evaluation committee found that the ease of replicating this system design for applications in other municipalities added to this project’s value as a showcase project."

The grant will be used to install two 17-kW photovoltaic systems instead of one at the Hayden/Udall Facility. Tucson Electric Power will provide project coordination and contracting for construction of the solar electric systems through sister company, Global Solar Energy, Inc. TEP will also provide labor and technical expertise for system maintenance. The City of Tucson and the Greater Tucson Coalition for Solar will partner to use the photovoltaic site for public education and as a solar training facility.

"TEP is a leader in the generation of renewable resources in Arizona. The Hayden/Udall Project is another example of how, by forging local partnerships, we are able to benefit the entire community," said James S. Pignatelli, Chairman, President and CEO of Tucson Electric Power and UniSource Energy Corporation. The Hayden/Udall Project is currently in progress and on schedule for completion on or before September 30, 2002.
